SEO series : Search Engine Research

Thursday, November 2nd, 2006

SEO series of blogs has long been overdue.

I was told that SEO sounds superficial and un-sustainnable.
Of cos, SEO need lots of hard and consistant hard work.

Too many people think Internet Marketing is a place for fun. In actual fact, Internet Marketing is just like running a real life business. SEO is something like branding. Build enough backlinks to put yourself in the no. 1 place on the search engine so that people searching that particular keyword would see your site as the number one spot.

Naturally, before you start to do SEO for your site, you need to research the effectiveness of the keyword. getting ranked no. 1 for “TOFUmonkey is the most handsome guy in the world” would probably do nothing in terms of monetary terms, but I guess it does lots for my ego! hahaha…

Neither does competing for the super competitive keyword like mortage or divorce or insurance. It’s already been highly optimised. So we need to ensure that our keywords is not too competitive and able to compete.

How do we do that? Here’s how. Go to Google.com, type in your keyword with a “. for example. “TOFU is handsome”
This would give you the search results for the exact phrase.

Then, you go to inventory.overture.com, type in TOFU is handsome, without the “. You should be able to get some results back. Well, at least not this phrase. hahaha.

Then you divide the Google results by the number of searches. This would give you the RS ratio. Anything more than 400 may be a little too competitive for beginners. Also, ensuring the google results is between 3-5 million for beginners.

Cos even though the RS ratio may be 300 but the results returned is 500 million. It’s gonna take hell alot of time to get ranked no.1

Thus keyword research is like building the foundation of a house. You can’t see it when the house is built. But it’s essential to the survival of the building when something bad happens.

Hope the information helps.
Kindly comment please. :)

Build it and they will come?

Tuesday, October 10th, 2006

In the ancient times of the brick & motar, they say, build it and the people will come.
I guess that applies for times before year 2000.

In the information age and the internet age, there’s a zillion websites out there. Build it and they will come? ha! one visitor per day perharps?

That’s where SEO comes in. I have a few websites and a lot more blogs but all these do not generate enough traffic for me to survivie anyway.

That’s where SEO come in. Just to highlight a little bit, SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. It’s a process of getting your website rankings up so that when people searching for a certain key word, your website comes up first. :)

As I mentioned, I’ve created a few websites and tens more of blogger blogs, but the traffic just can’t sustain the effort in maintaining the content for it.

Why? Cos I suck at the SEO portion and the methods for driving traffic is unfocused and totally not correct. I don’t have the strategies and the methods of doing it. Well okay, I think I have the strategies for it, just that I’m not applying it in the correct way.

I’m posting to blogs, to forums. But I’ve realised that I made the mistake of not choosing the correct blogs and the correct forums. There’s not enough traffic generated over there to be able to direct over.

Also, I stop short of submitting to article directories. I just can’t write for the sake of writing. I also realised recently of this problem. If I have a purpose to share information based on something, I’ll be naturally able to write.

But if I’m supposed to write an article for article submission, I wouldn’t be able to do so. Just realised it’s really a mindset problem.

Guess I need to attend Stuart from aktlg.com’s Patterns of Excellence. This’ll greatly increase and enhance my mindset! :) but it’s US$1125… I’ll have to make that amount first before I can get. Arrgh, it’s really a chicken & egg scenarios.

Nevertheless, there’s always a first step to take. And since SEO is a really huge topic, I’ll set it to be a series to come. Stay tuned for the series of SEO need to dos….

Cheers!

Search Engine Optimization : SEO

Monday, October 2nd, 2006

who the **** am I to talk about SEO?
I was asking myself when I first wanted to blog about this thing.

Well, even if I’m a newbie in this area, doesn’t mean I cannot talk about it rite?
For example, if I’m not yet rich, doesn’t mean I do not know anything about cashflow management? hehehehe…

SEO, besides list building is really another area that we need to look into.
Onsite optimization, off-site optimization. meta tags, keywords density, keywords proximity… blar blar blar…

All these sound sooo daunting when Stuart first talked about it… It was really scary.
But I guess we all need to start some where…

Talking from a newbie point of view, do not be afraid to venture into the unknown, especially when SEO done right, will move you up the ranks and drive traffic to your site to increase your earning, through adsense, affiliate marketing or product selling.

It doesn’t matter. Spend sometime in Search Engine Optimization, it’ll do you good.

Post to article directory everyday (yes, i flunked in this… :p)
post to blogs, myspace, blogger.com, put comments, invite them to you space…

Whatever it is, make yourself KNOWN in the zillion websites out there! :)

Cheers,
